Wemberleeeeee!
There was an electric atmosphere at Wembley tonight for the match between England and Scotland - the oldest international fixture in football history (first played in 1872, but not played for the last 14 years). It was a five goal extravaganza with England finally coming out on top, winning 3-2.
I have to say that I have never felt like an away fan at Wembley before but, sitting just 2 seats away from the barrier between English and Scottish fans (and there were a lot of them), it did have its moments of feeling in the minority.
Also, during the anthems and at various points during the match when goals were scored, it got a little intimidating as both sets of fans started posturing at each other. There was no violence, but we got the feeling that had the barrier not been there and the security staff not been in attention in great numbers, it would have just taken one stupid person to kick it off. Not something I've really experienced before and we just kept our heads down and watched the match.
It's odd behaviour really... these people probably wouldn't behave like this in the street to each other, but put them in a football stadium and the language and gestures they use are terribly offensive. I realise that, for some, this is all part of the experience and the fun of going to the game, but I have to say it felt intimidating and a bit scary at times.
All in all, I enjoyed the night... and the result... but would try not to sit that close to the away fans in future as this brought out a horrible side of both sets of "supporters".
