The Italian Chapel

It mattered not a jot that the mist was clinging to the land again and a smirr of rain was ever present, I was off to the metropolis of Kirkwall to meet up with fellow blipper Northern in the comfort of a coffee house.

Since we met last summer, she has been very busy with the layout and signage of the new Fossil and Heritage Centre in Burray which his Lordship and I have graced on many occasion over the let three weeks.
Not only can we can vouch for her work being an astounding success, but we can categorically say the soup and dark tiffin cake in the cafe are second to none.

The sun at one stage made a valiant effort to shine on the tourists milling about the town for the St Magnus Festival and it managed for about half an hour before the mist and rain swept in again.

But there was just enough time to pay a quick visit to the Italian Chapel, designed from a converted Nissan hut by Italian prisoners of WW2 on Lamb Holm island across the first Churchill barrier. It is an amazing piece of creativity made from any materials that the prisoners could find.

Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow for our boat trip to North Ronaldsay, the most northerly of the Orkney Islands.
