Ythan Estuary
Of the places we've "discovered"while birding from Perth the Ythan Estuary has got to be one of our favourites, so knowing it was a good site for Little Terns it was simply a case of choosing which day to go. Almost immediately on arrival we were watching them fishing right in front of us - Check out RCB for a rather fine shot. The ternery itself is away on the far bank of the Ythan well protected and guarded by the Scottish Natural Heritage staff of Forvie National Nature Reserve.
We paid the reserve centre a visit, watched a film on the terns then had a wander round their Heath Trail and were pleased to discover a Glaucous Gull bathing on Sand Loch.
Returning with over 1200 photos today isn't doing the cause of catching up on blip much good. Have you heard the one about the birder that went out without his identification guide and saw a juvenile black-head and convinced himself it could be a Red-necked phalarope or the juvenile Starling that he couldn't work out what it was. Hey ho, at least a couple of the 1200 can be deleted.
