A Flock of Common Scoters

A great birding day today. Short drive to Kirkcaldy then a meander along the front at Seafield. Eider, Long-tailed Duck, Common Scoter, Redshank, Greenshank, Turnstone, Purple Sandpiper, Ringed Plover, Knot, Oystercatcher & Bar-tailed Godwit.

So with all those good birds why the decidedly average photo? Well, I'd call it atmospheric as opposed to decidedly average, but to answer your question we're on the north of the Forth, the sun's in the south, so lighting is tricky. No problem, you overexpose, but that's tricky to get right with birds that move in and out of water & rocks. With a bright water background you need an overexposure, with a dark rock background you might need an underexposure so's the bird's not overexposed and taking on aperture priority the speed setting is all over the shop. Let's just stop moaning and say a lot of the photos weren't as good as I'd hoped they'd be.

RCB salvaged a nice Greenshank from the wreckage.
