Clunes Halt

This is the location of the Clunes Halt which was in use on the Far North line until 1960's, when many of the halts and stations along the line were shut under the Beeching Madness. Thankfully, the line was kept open, contrary to the doctor's orders, which would have left no railway north of Stirling.

Following an unusual outbreak of common sense, the Beauly station, about 5 miles north of here, was re-opened in 2002 and now has one of the highest usage per head of population in the country. A rail success story which could be repeated across the network, if there was the political will.
