Shock in the Early Morning
This is the translated article I found early this morning in our newspaper.
What you see sitting on the newspaper is a little female Elwetritsch.
I will show you more versions of Elwetritsche soon.
Poor thing! At least its not full moon yet - thats when the real hunt starts.
Elwetritsch Hunt:
From ones earliest years every Pfälzer (resident of the Palatinate) knows about the Elwetritsch und where she lives.
Living in scrubs and bushes, they wake up at dusk und once it really gets dark they slip out of their hiding-place. Most of the time they are out looking for a mate or food, when hunters catch them.
If you want to go hunting for Elwetritsche, you need to obey some rules:
First of all you need at least two friends, and all of you need to have drunk at least 2 Schoppen of wine (Schoppen = wine severd by the glass ca. ½ liter). Now you need the hunting equipment which is an oil lamp, a potato sack, some bottles of wine and a long stick. The wine is hugely important; without it you will not get to see any Elwetritsch.
The resemblance to chicken, duck and goose was confirmed by all observers. She has a very long beak, a way too long neck und the wings are too small for flying (thats why an Elwetritsch can make a lot of fuss about nothing).
The bird adapts to its habitat. Those living on hillsides sometimes have different leg length to adjust to the hill. Some have six legs, others only need two for walking. The feathering or coat of an Elwetritsch may (doesn't have to!) change by the time of the year: in warm seasons it may be colourful, in winter you may see a brownish coatfeathering.
Signed by the Palatinate Wine Queen (yes, we too have a Queen!)
And best of all:
You can answer a question about the Elwetritsch and you can win a wine tasting session and some bottles of wine.
The question is:
How many Schoppen are at least needed to be drunk before you can go on an Elwetritsch-Hunt?
