Blindley Heath again
I stopped to take some photos of this pond last year but ended up blipping the sign. Tonight, on the way home, I tried again. It really is charming and next to the village cricket pitch. While I was there a bloke came over and started chatting. His company, Repco tyres, part funded the building of the pond and he designed it. There had been a much larger pond on the site many years ago but it fell into disuse and was filled in forty or fifty years ago when a local housing estate was built. About ten years ago they got some money from BAA, it's on the flightpath to Gatwick, and set about creating this pond. They dug out the infill down to the original depth and because it sits on a clay bed (London clay I'd guess but I know enough geologists if anyone wants me to get a definitive answer) there was no need for a liner. It's fed from rainwater and the road drains through a filter to top it up. They didn't put any fish in but it's well stocked by people fly-tipping unwanted pet fish.
So there ya go - it started as a quick photo on the way home and now you have a narrative to go with it. If anyone wants to visit the pond it's on the A22 at the junction with Ray Lane.
Nearly Friday!
