Cromwell spent some (bloody) time laying waste up here. Locally this tower is known as Cromwell's Tower, though possibly had nothing to do with him. I've seen mention elsewhere that it was a windmill at one time. It's now in the middle of none too attractive industrial estate.
According to the plaque:
To the East of this clock tower lie the ramparts of Cromwell's citadel. Founded in 1652 and demolished in 1661, after the restoration of the Monarchy.
This clock tower was partially demolished, and later re-roofed
A lot of the stone used to create the citadel was taken from the former Ormond Castle, that stood near Avoch on the Black Isle. There nothing to see of that demolished citadel... or Ormond Castle. No doubt the stone was then used elsewhere.
An uninspiring snap taken at lunchtime. Started the day tired, but after today's cycle and swim, I'm fair wabbit (knackered).
