From grain to gran and up for grabs
Much, much too wet to venture out with a camera today but in the morning I put the finishing touches to our holiday cottage prior to the arrival of the year's last guests. Here's a view of the downstairs sitting/dining room, looking towards the end wall with the stove.
The place has only one bedroom (sleeps three) but one of these sofas doubles as a bed. It's a simple but cosy hideaway that appeals to walkers, birders and country lovers who prefer modesty to luxury. The coast is only 15 minutes walk and if you are tired or rained off there are shelves of books to keep you entertained. It's off the road but only a short distance by car or bus from our small town.
Originally this building was a granary which also had the wherewithal to roast and malt the sprouted barley grains used to make beer for the farm's family and workers. Then it became a chicken house. Later, our predecessors evicted the hens and converted it into a granny annexe ("for the old boiler".) We turned into a seasonal self-catering holiday cottage, and a short-term winter let. Everyone who stays seems to enjoy its peace and simplicity. I just wish more would come. This has not been a busy year and the cottage has been empty more often than I would prefer.
Ever considered West Wales as a holiday destination?
