Basingstoke Canal, St John's, Woking, Surrey
It's a while since we walked along the towpath of the Basingstoke Canal so we took advantage of a mild autumn morning. Apart from mallards, swans and moorhen (all snapped) we also saw a kingfisher and a wren (but neither hung about to be photographed, sadly). The canal was completed in 1794 but had become derelict by the 1960s until a restoration project launched in the 1970s recovered a 32-mile long section.
Whoever wrote up the history of the canal on Wikipedia seems to have been captivated by a report on the Aldershot section of a UFO sighting in 1988 by a Mr Alfred Burtoo. Mr Burtoo said he was taken on board an alien space craft and interviewed by its occupants who I guess must have spoken good English. As far as I know Mr Burtoo was no relation to H G Wells (see my Blips for Oct 4 and 8).
