Between fen and mountains

Marble pavement

I always associate marble with fine antique furniture, Victorian clocks and Italianate architecture. It came as a surprise to me to find, in this area, so much of this pink marble used in everyday, utilitarian artefacts such as kerbstones and pavements. This is a section of the town square in Villefranche opposite the church. The quarries are in the surrounding hills and marble striations can be seen in the rocks on any mountain walk.

I liked the one leaf sitting there on a large expanse of stone.
