Santiago - Patron Saint of Spain
This morning we went to the neighbouring village to have a pre -lunch tapa and beer.
This weather vane caught my eye. It sits atop the original village town hall (now left empty, following the construction of a new building).
I rather like its weathered patina.
It shows the classic image of Santiago de Compostela as crusader (Christian apostle St. James, the Patron Saint of Spain) astride a white stallion, with both his sword and flag held aloft.
It recalls the centuries of the 'Reconquista' when the Iberian Peninsula was slowly 'recaptured' from the Muslim rulers of Al-Andaluz.
It's strange to think how this modest little weather vane is so heavy with political, religious and cultural symbolism - not exactly PC...
I have now been doing blipfoto for a month!
