Heavy Duty Flotsam..

.. or maybe jetsam. Probably flotsam.

It was a beautiful morning for a walk on my local beach at Quendale Bay. I've never seen the tide higher up the beach that it was this morning.

There are some beach (and surf) pictures from today on flickr. However, I did get very intrigued by this really heavy duty object sitting in the sand at the east end of the beach.

Any suggestions about what it might be? It's about 60-70 cm across (2 feet in old money) - and way too heavy for me to move.

UPDATE: I posted this picture at about 9pm, having watched the sky completely cloud up removing (I thought) any chance of seeing the promised northern lights. Then at about 10:30....On Flickr. One of my rules is that once posted a blip shouldn't be changed....
