Anniversary

Today is the anniversary of our wedding. It also happens to be the anniversary of the day my youngest sister was born, and the anniversary of the arrival in New Zealand of William Hobson in 1840. Long before my sister was born, and before the wonderful S and I were wed. Saturday 29 January 1842 was declared a public holiday by Governor Hobson. Although provinces in New Zealand were abolished in 1876, this day has remained the anniversary day for those parts of the northern North Island which were once the Auckland Province. A public holiday is given on the Monday closest to the actual date of the anniversary. The annual Anniversary Day Regatta, which involves thousands of yachts, takes place on the holiday, as do lots of other entertainments.

We have had a lovely day, despite the relative paucity of sunshine. Friends visited for lunch, prepared for us by daughter J. This evening (just after I took this photograph using the tripod), we went to mother-in-law's home where she had prepared rice pudding and stewed plums for us.

The wind was quite strong when I chose to take the picture (hence the windblown look), and the sun was low in the west casting awkward shadows. I have chosen to leave the photo unadjusted.
