Lost But Not Forgotten
A few months ago, the ground was dry and the grass dead during the last of the summer months. The kitties discovered that by digging in the dirt, they could unearth little balls to bat around in play. The Comforts, Paul and Annie, had no time for the little garden, once again. Still, some of the bulbs have survived and the little flowers have made their way skyward to remind us that, even when we are unaware of them, they have not been forgotten. They were created for a purpose, and they have been cared for by their creator. Sweet little things.
"You're trying to kill me! No one cares about me" says Mother Comfort all night long. We agreed with the nursing staff as morning came, that she needed some time to rest and recover from such a trying time. Although she felt totally lost and alone, actually fighting the medical staff off as much as she could, she was never forgotten. We gathered this morning to pray and give thanks and praise to our Creator, and we asked, 'Please reach out to her, please bring her comfort and soften her heart so that she will not be afraid.'
Although we were not there physically, the hand of God reaches where we can not see and touches the heart that we can not touch. There was no change in medication (the medication they gave her last evening to sedate her had had no effect), no change in treatment, but by the time we called again, she was calm, cooperative and eating again. Very tired by now, but doing well. We agreed with the staff once again and, at the risk of letting her feel 'alone' for an extended period of time, we stayed away several more hours. By the time we visited this evening, she was all smiles and asked us if we had recovered from her little 'spell'. She recounted most details accurately with the exception of the cause. Since she had pulled out her IV multiple times in the night, her arms were restrained which she was tolerating well, despite her inability to scratch her face. Too exhausted to be upset about it, I suspect.
I'm so grateful that our loving Savior can do what we can not. I recognize we may face more of these difficult episodes, but I also recognize that there is help for the soul that has lost it's way...and that while my ability to console may fall short, His grace is still sufficient.
