Beneath Biscay

Botanical Gardens

This is taken at Gijon's botanical gardens 'Jardín Botánico Atlántico'.

The bulding in the middle is an Asturian 'panera'. These are rectangular store houses supported by six staddle stones. Although quite common in Asturias even more common in the countryside is the 'horreo'. Simlar but square and smaller, with four stadle stones, one at each corner.

This example is perfectly manicured, but those in the countryside are normally much more time-worn and rustic. It very typical to hang ears of maize from these buildings to dry, as shown here.
