The Lozarithm Lens

Clevedon Bay

When I went to the coast last month, I realized again how important the sea was to visit and to experience, and I resolved to try and get down to a shore once a month if possible for the rest of the year.

I was brought up in the west Midlands, a long way from the sea, and only spent a week or so at the seaside each year, on holiday. Now I live in Wiltshire - a landlocked county rivened by canals and rivers, but a couple of hours drive away from the briny deep.

The Severn Estuary is perhaps not truly sea as it flows into the Bristol Channel before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, and on the day ChristieScruff and I visited it was so calm there was barely a ripple of a wave to be seen, but still it counts for my purposes.

We had stopped off at Chew Valley Lake on the journey down and had lunch at the Moon And Sixpence on The Beach at Clevedon, facing the view seen here, including the expensively rebuilt pier so admired by Sir John Betjeman. In the afternoon we drove on to our main destination of Portishead, and there explored the dock and the boatyards, the Marine Lake and Woodhill Bay up to Battery Point.

It was a beautiful day, and we were just in time as the unseasonal warmth was gone by the next day.
