During the great stone shortage of the early 18th Century, desperate builders resorted to many unlikely alternatives. Most people know that a large part of Regency Bath was made from Cheddar, but how many visitors to Gloucester, I wonder, realise that, somewhat surprisingly, it is largely built out of Red Leicester? It would be nice if the more socialist parts of Leicester were made from Double Gloucester. But they aren't.
