The Grainger Market, Newcastle upon Tyne
Went to Newcastle today. Bit of financial business then shopping. Bought some shoes on impulse - just a pair of everyday comfortable ones. Popped into The Grainger Market for bread rolls and quiche.
The Grainger Market is a Grade I listed covered market constructed as part of the 19th century redevelopment of the city to replace markets on the site of Grey Street. It was designed by John Dobson and opened in 1835. It was divided into two parts: a meat market laid out in a series of aisles, and a section which was a vegetable market constructed as a large open-plan hall. My shot was taken in this large hall with the lovely glass roof. When the nearby " Green Market" closed the fish stalls and the plant/flower stalls moved into the Grainger Market.
The market is home to perhaps the smallest branch of Marks & Spencer - a market stall known as Marks and Spencer's Original Penny Bazaar.
The stall with the red and white striped roof in the centre of my shot is called "Shanghai Store " - I expect it's popular with the many Chinese youngsters who come to Newcastle to study in the two Universities.
