"The Great Britian V"
Played the madman this morning and went out in the "Lashing Rain" along with another local blipper -the poss - and David Shillabeer, a friend of mine. All of us are 70+ years but we climbed a very steep hill to get to the South end of The Culloden Viaduct (See my blip of 22/4). Why? Because we knew that a couple of steam trains had been visiting Inverness and area over the weekend and they were returning South this morning. We dont often get the chance to see, let alone photograph these beauties in full flight so rain or not, we were going to catch them. The first one through was a light loco, a black 5 and it had'nt got the puff to get up the hill out of Inverness. This meant that it was towed by a diesel loco which obscured the one we were after. The second came through about 20 minutes later and as you can see was under full power "The Great Britian V" came over the hill (she did not blow) and storming across the viaduct. The sound and the sight was fantastic, taking me back to my childhood to when I and pals used to stand on the railway bridge at the top of Janet Street in Thurso in the hope that a train would pass underneath and we would be enveloped in the smoke.
Sorry the shot is so grainy but the light was such that i had to use an ISO of 1600 to get the shutter speed I wanted. I am about dried out now.
