Corgarff CAstle

Another glorious day in the highlands. The temperature today at Tomintoul while I was there was 25.5 C. Can this be summer?

On the way to Tomintoul I stopped to take a few pictures of Corgarff Castle about 12 miles or so from Tomintoul. This is one of my favourite castles in the Highlands. It was originally a traditional Scottish tower house. After the 1745 rebellion it was taken over by the Army. They added the exterior wall and stationed a small military contingent there.

As well as keeping an eye on the locals it also served to attempt to control illicit whisky distilling. This must have been a pretty unpopular posting for the sheer isolation of the location. There would have been no fun to be had for the soldiers stationed here for miles around. It is high in the Cairngorms, so in winter they would have been snowed in and frozen.

Today instead there was glorious sunshine. Quite a few tourists of various nationalities, and lots of motor cyclists. The road passing near the Castle is very picturesque, at intervals with a good view ahead for a mile or so, so the motor cyclists can have some fun. Unlike the soldiers 350 years ago.
