The Singh Twins
Another day, another art-form!
Today saw the launch of our 'Dignity in Mental Health' art exhibition at Unit 51/Baltic Creative and we were delighted that internationally renowned artists The Singh Twins were there to open the show and lend us their support.
If you've been watching Simon Scharma's current 'Face of Britain' series on BBC2 you'll have seen that he devoted the final 10 minutes or so of this week's episode ('Faces of the People') to The Singh Twins and their work. You can still see the programme on the BBC iPlayer at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b06h1l3s/face-of-britain-by-simon-schama-2-faces-of-the-people - it's well worth a watch!
It was a real treat to spend time chatting to the twins about their work (they're currently preparing for a show in Toronto and have got mouth-wateringly exciting plans for a new show which will take a couple of years to put together but which will encompass Indian textiles, global trade, the slave trade, feminism and the ongoing repercussions of British colonialism) and they were every bit as charming and delightful as Professor Green was last night. My week continues to seesaw between moments of high anxiety about everything running smoothly and moments of basking in the warm glow of human loveliness!
Our exhibition features work submitted by 19 solo artists and art groups - all of whom have direct personal experience of mental distress - and it runs for the next 3 days. The quality of the work is staggering and we're thrilled to be showing it in the heart of Liverpool's creative quarter as we want to emphasise that the show is very much about the standard of the art and not something that should be 'ghettoised' within a purely mental health context.
Thanks to all the artists who submitted their work; to The Singh Twins - Amrit and Rabindra - for their support and for all the time they took to speak to the artists whose work is included in the exhibition, it was very much appreciated; to the amazing Margaret Brown for all her hard work in co-ordinating the show and to Jazamin Sinclair for curation!
Off to bed in a minute as I've got to be up early for the final big day of the festival tomorrow... Have a great weekend everyone!
