Ein Deutscher schwarze zelt....
....had some errands to do up at Bonaly Scout Centre tonight. Whilst there, I noticed an example of my favourite tent design, a Jurte; commonly used by German Scouts. It's possible to increase and decrease it's size simply by adding or removing panels of black cotton. The design was developed in Germany in the 1930's and banned by the Nazi's because it was popular with non-Nazi youth movements, including the Scouts. I love the simplicity, hard-wearing nature and the fact that you can light a cooking fire inside. My ambition is to have one and burn peat in the fire (perhaps whilst sipping on a peaty dram from my coffee mug).
The owners of this tent are a Scout troop from Dusseldorf. "Your little black flies are most annoying".........aye, you're not the first to say that mate.
