Colintraive to Rhubodach Ferry
Day 13
One of Britain's shortest sea crossings. It takes just five minutes to cross over the Kyles of Bute from the mainland to the Isle of Bute.
We decided to enjoy a longer drive and a short crossing, probably a mistake in hindsight. As we drove north beside Loch Lomond, the rain became torrential and driving over The Rest and Be Thankful was scary. The mountain streams had turned into gushing waterfalls right beside the road. The rain was so heavy, we had to slow right down with the wipers not coping at full speed. Within the hour we heard on the radio that there had been another landslip and The Rest had been closed. We were very fortunate.
Once over on the island, we drove the 8 miles into Rothesay. The town does look a little tired, however lots of interesting architecture including the 1938 Art Deco Pavilion, and restored Victorian Toilets. The ferries were busy, and a wee treat mid evening was seeing the Waverley coming Doon the Watter.
On a Wednesday evening, there was hardly anywhere open for an evening meal. I think Rothesay is a "Day Out" place where the cafes close at 6 pm. We were recommended to drive south to Kingarth, where we found a good hotel and excellent food.
