Comiston Cistern

Went for a late afternoon stroll to the Braid Burn and back up Cockmylane, so passing the Comiston Cistern, which was built in 1674 to collect the water from the four springs, from where it was piped to the reservoir at Castlehill.

As well as a fence next to the path and a fine growth of brambles there are now Heras barriers round the south end. It is a great pity that this ancient building is so vulnerable to vandalism, due largely, I think, to ignorance of its important history.

We also passed the Swan (or Sandglass) Spring Head which, to our delight, has now been mended, albeit with a concrete cap rather than stone.
