Extraordinary? Extra Ordinary?

Well it has been a bit of a whirlwind week with so much happening.

Extraordinary one might say. Certainly not ordinary and nowhere near extra-ordinary.

Extraordinary - It's a strange word/concept!

I do wonder how it came about. Extra is normally a reinforcing word. So in the case of extraordinary why is it that the meaning is not that of even more duller and mundane than ordinary/normal, in the sense that is the ordinary that is extra?

But instead it has the opposite meaning and extra seems to be enforcing that the ordinary had something extra, taking it beyond being ordinary.

I'm not having any of that! This post will be the last time I refer to something amazing as extraordinary and instead I will use extra ordinary to mean boring, dull, mundane etc.

So one last time for the purpose of this post I will use extraordinary in its socially acceptable context to mean outstanding, unique, special etc.

Pet Sounds - In the classical sense is extraordinary!

It is one of my favourite albums of all time. It really is a masterpiece and not in the overrated clichéd sense.
