He's back!
Every year a pair of swans come to spend the winter on the pond next to the first flat we lived in here in Westbury. Fossey ( the Labrador I sometimes walk ) still lives in a house that overlooks the pond and today I met her and Jo for a walkies. Then we went back to their house for coffee and I saw that the male swan had finally turned up. The female one arrived a few week ago. Jo says that she cries out at night in the first few days, no idea why - maybe calling out for her bloke? Anyway, he's finally arrived. Looks like he's had some kind of wound across the back of his neck, so maybe this is the reason for his late arrival. I'd so love to know where they spend their summers and if they've managed to sucessfully breed. Some years they come back earlier than others, so we can only guess that they failed to rear their young then, but we have no way of knowing ( I ask, but they only answer with snorts and grunts ). If only they knew how pleased we all are to see them each year!
