The Clavie
On a photography job tonight with the photographer from work. I was on the remote flash as he took the snaps he wanted.
We were down in Burghead at the Burning of the Clavie, and ancient Scottish custom at New Year. It's celebrated on 11 January, the first day of the Julian calendar. The Clavie, a half barrel is tarred and burned, and then carried round the town alight, with burning staves being handed to householders. It's considered lucky to be given a piece of the Clavie - tradition says if you stick it up the chimney, it keeps the witches away.
I was given a bit before heading home, but I've no chimney!
