Reason no.4: coz it looks so much like New York.
I know, I know, it's the other way round! Only teasing!

When I was a student reading American novels, I kept coming across 'the stoop'. People were always sitting on 'the stoop'. It took me many years before I understood that a stoop was a short flight of external stairs. Wikipedia says the word comes from Dutch. I prefer to believe that those immigrants to New York built houses that reminded them of London. Here: Ladbroke Grove
