White Watching

It's a working weekend for me so I'm afraid little chance to catch up with people here and respond to your comments. I'm sorry about that. The opinion on Armstrong was pretty unanimous though. Nobody had an ounce of sympathy for the man. He seems to have succeeded in driving public opinion even further down following his interview with Oprah. There were no surprises in the second instalment. I was once again left with the feeling that I was only getting a distilled version of the truth and disappointed that Winfrey didn't push him harder on certain points. He found it impossible to suppress his arrogance, and appeared quite unable to express any real remorse.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing was his admission that he felt invincible and that he never worried about getting caught. His self-belief borders on the psychotic. As his story evolved from a fairytale of survival into a whole mythology of winning, the lies could only be defended by going all out on attack. As the mythology grew the stakes got higher and the attacks on anyone who was a threat became nastier. And to think that he would almost certainly have got away with it all if it hadn't been for that desire to make a comeback. That was the ultimate arrogance and it has cost him everything - except that there is now a hope that he can recover some semblance of genuine self-respect for himself. But there is a very long journey ahead of him yet on that particular road.

I went for a run on the moor at lunchtime. There wasn't much more overnight snow but it's still quite a winter wonderland outside. We just need the sun to shine a bit to make the landscape glisten and all sparkly. It doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon though. Really no need to do any black and white conversion on my photographs today. The landscape is almost entirely monochromatic. And mostly white!
