The Red Crosses

Many signs and emblems over time have been used to signify numerous different things. Take the humble red cross as found on these trees -

- X marks the spot- could there be buried treasure here?

- Is it an indiation the Great Plague has returned to these shores? In the 1600s, any family that had one member infected by the plague was locked in their home for forty days and nights. A red cross was painted on the door to warn others of the plight of those in the house.

- Is it to higlight the fact first aid kits can be found hidden in the trees?

- Are the British Red Cross using the trees for advertising?

Apparently the red cross symbol traditionally signifies mercy and absolute neutrality. Unfortunately for these trees, they're right in the path of the Edinburgh Trams route and I suspect the reason they have been marked with the big red crosses means they won't be shown any mercy whatsoever!
