snow mail
The snow fell for most of the day, bringing winter back to the Great Horton Road. I'd been planning a blip of this iconic Victorian Handyside pillar box anyway, but they do look great in the snow.
Pillar boxes are now supposed to be protected parts of our streetscape, but this one has fallen victim to the 1980s local authority trend of vandal-proofing boxes with a permanent bumpy surface - presumably a deterrent against fly posting. Perhaps the fact that this box is at the edge of campus made it particularly prone to suffocation through adverts. Someone I'm sure appreciates the irony in vandal-proofing proving to be an act of heritage vandalism.
For more post box arcana, there's a study group.
