Seriously?

Tonight is my evening duty supervising residential students in the library. By coincidence, at the Department Heads' meeting today we discussed the potential of our school library as a C21st resource and information centre in the pursuit of learning - not just as a repository for books. How much the process of 'finding out' has changed is illustrated by the observation that everyone in here tonight is working on their lap tops (including me) with their headphones on (including me) - oblivious to the books that surround them, except as decor.

When Gould Hall was built in 1914, this space was the Assembly Hall, (my photo on 17th Jan was taken from the original balcony). In 1969 it was converted to the gym and then transformed into the Library in 1992.

A library (from French "librairie"; Latin "liber" = book) is an organized collection of information resources made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing. http://en.wikipedia.org
