Blue skies again today
This is the old General Hospital which is due to be made into flats - I want the glass penthouse for mine. Could have straightened it up a bit but run out of time, sorry.
This side looks over the 'new cut' into Bedminster. The river bed was cut in the 1800's to divert the river Avon round the Harbour which was tidal. Locks were fitted either end of the harbour and so it was made 'floating' for all the boats that could be unloaded so much more quickly. Apparently it was such a busy place that previously boats had to be held down river waiting to come in and unload and sometimes their cargoes would go bad during the wait. Have a look at the map as I will try to take a pic from the other side which looks over a basin. That had a side lock into the New Cut but it was closed off during the war in case it got bombed and Bristol imploded into the tidal basin. That was a worry recently when it was decided to replace all the lock gates as they were so old.
