The view you don't see from the train
This is the North Portal to Clayton tunnel. At 1 mile 499 yards (2065 metres) it is the longest tunnel on the London-Brighton main line. The turreted and castellated north portal, along with its attached cottage perched directly over the line, is fascinating but not easy to photograph successfully (well I found it difficult anyway).
I was chatting to the resident of the cottage who pointed out that, being North facing, it gets very little sunlight and is understandably a bit chilly - particularly at this time of year! It's a good job it has a chimney for open fires - I wonder if the firemen from the steam locos in the 1800's and 1900's would drop off the odd lump of Welsh Steam coal for the local resident?
