Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum

Another beautiful day in Glasgow.

This is a view of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum from the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre. During the Commonwealth Games next year the Centre will host the Lawn Bowls competitions.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum is more than an art gallery, Kelvingrove is a Glasgow institution which is as beloved by locals as by tourists visiting the city. It houses one of Europe's great civic art collections, and is the most visited museum in the United Kingdom outside London.

The construction of Kelvingrove was partly financed by the proceeds of the 1888 International Exhibition held in Kelvingrove Park. The gallery was designed by the English architects Sir John W. Simpson and E.J. Milner Allen and opened in 1901. It is built in a Spanish Baroque style, and follows the Glaswegian tradition of using red sandstone from Dumfries.
