The King......
..has been seriously ill in Hospital with Birketts Lymphona. I didn't appreciate how ill until todays visit.
He was admitted to A&E last Friday (23rd) with a persistent ear ache the QMC staff rapidly performed a broad and systematic series of tests and scans by ENT then oncology. He's often been squeezed into spare emergency slots and other test's and procedures constantly adapted and sometimes deliberately delayed by the Consultants. The NHS at it's very very best. We're fortunate that the QMC is a teaching hospital with an excellent Oncology department. The multidisciplinary teams swift and systematic action has prevented life changing events happening to him.
His diagnosis was pinpointed midweek, and has had chemo under mild GA via his spine twice now, with other chemo applied via line.
He had much better colour today following his second blood transfusion last night, but was very bloated with the effects of his steroids. His left eye lid was very swollen and virtually closed (having slept on that side last night).
He's not been allowed to eat anything for a week to date.
Today was the first chance we'd had to visit and he exceeded my expectations at the amount of time he was half awake, spoke and smiled. I so enjoyed stroking his hair foot etc and reading him one and a half books before he said he wanted to sleep. He raised an instant smile on seeing the olive wood heart, and wooden mouse just like the ones we look at carved into the pews, chairs etc at The Minster. He managed to partially engage for an hour and a half - by far his best visit according to my daughter and partner.
Our village church will include him in their prayers tomorrow as will a catholic friend we saw last night. I will be at The Minster, which may help me to shed a few more tears, apart from anything else.
He's far from being out of the woods yet and has a long journey ahead of him, but today there was some good news including his first wee into a carboard vessel, which the Consultant was concerned to know he could achieve.
