Todmorden Town Hall
This is Todmorden Town Hall and it is built over the river that used to be the boundary between Lancashire and Yorkshire. The boundary line went straight through the middle of the Town Hall until Todmorden was completely encompassed in Yorkshire in 1888.
One of the more interesting external features of the Town Hall is the pediment. This fine carved stonework has two central female figures on a pedestal. The left hand one represents Lancashire (cotton spinning industry) and the right hand one Yorkshire (woollen industry, engineering and agriculture).
This needs to be viewed large to see the remarkable detail of the carving.
