Caged Lemons
Today started a bit slowly (but somehow still early) after last night's socialising at Commonground. The weather was foul, which was a real shame as I'd hoped to get a nice blip of the beautiful bushland up there... or a least a good one of the mob of kangaroos that lives up there. Instead, we spent the morning inside, hanging around waiting for the time for our meeting to discuss what Commonground's new governance structure might become.
Commongound is a cooperative that was started in the early 1980s by people interested in fostering socially aware policies, procedures and programs in the community at large. Its ethos is fundamentally oriented towards creating a just, egalitarian and non-violent world, which it does by facilitating social change groups and other causes that may need some help or a place to meet (such as aboriginal and women's rights groups, and youth or environmental groups). We got involved through some Melbourne friends (one of whom was born and brought up up there). They really do a cracking job at what they do.
The last couple of years, we've put on a successful music festival up there (you know me well enough with my music by now!). Unfortunately it's not happening this year due to some unfortunate circumstances, but we're already starting to think about 2014, which is very exciting.
I forgot to say, everyone involved is also a very kind, non-judgmental and welcoming person. It's a pleasure to be able to get up there for the odd weekend and help out (be it cutting trees, landscaping or digging out the hill for the new pizza oven!)
We came back this afternoon because Gina, Miles and I decided that we need some time off. We're going to bed now and it's not even 9pm on a Saturday night.
How life has changed!
The blip is taken straight up from the kitchen bench at Commonground. Not the most interesting, but it's what I have for today. I hope that weekends in Blipland are progressing well!
