Diary of an Edinburgher

A visit to our old haunts

We were setting off this morning to see the changing of the guard, which happens every day at 12 o'clock. We've been meaning to see this for longer than we'd been looking for the Round Tower. But too much fiddling around, and suddenly, we were running late...

So we will see the changing of the guards tomorrow. But today we hopped on a bus and went to explore the area of Norrebro, which is a multi-cultural, up and coming edgy area that we were told not to cycle through at night. (Us? Cycle? At night?)

Actually, we knew the area, as several years ago we bid in a 'silent auction' and won a week 'in a luxury centre-city flat'. The flat belonged to a friend of the girl raising money for some charitable feat she was about to do. The flat was not 'luxurious' and it was not 'centre-city'.

However, I can see the area is up-and-coming, and the young man had made a good investment. Once it was fixed up and had all mod cons...

We had a wander round. Some fabulous graffiti. We found a tiny bakery with a queue. We looked in the window at a huge array of delicious treats. We pointed to a couple of pastries, which turned out to be 'blåbær snurrers' and apart from being the most delightful name, were the chewiest, flakiest, blueberriest things I have ever eaten. And they were the size of dinner plates. We had one each, of course. They looked smaller in the window.

All along the long wall of a cemetery were people selling stuff. Clothes, bikes, cameras, drinks coolers. This lady had really dressed up for the occasion, and kindly even sat down in the shade for me to photograph her. Those silver sticks with knobs on one end are for freezing first, then putting in your drink.

We met Elvis the English Bulldog, who posed miserably for a photo, too. And on the (long hot) walk home by the lakes, we stopped frequently to watch the water birds.

Those stairs are still killing me, especially with a shopping bag, but boy! I do look forward to a Magnum being brought to me when I flop on the sofa gasping like an old seal.

Visitors tonight - Rob and Mrs Rob are coming for tea/dinner/supper. How exciting is that! Commenting (on blip) may be curtailed. Commenting (generally) will be in full flow.

PS Happy Birthday A!
