Big balls in Bellingham

I toyed with the idea of letting my imagination run amok to fabricate a crazy, fantasmagorical story to go with this intriguing wooden ball, sitting on what looks like a king-sized golf tee. You may not be able to tell from my photo, but the wooden ball, which looks like a spherical Rubik's Cube, is close to four feet in diameter. Smooth as silk, beautifully stained, it sits like a big egg atop a big egg holder in downtown Bellingham, WA.

The Big Wooden Ball is actually called "Spherilous," and is the creation of local artist, Jeremy Hughes. It is part of the exhibit, Nature in the Balance: Artists Interpreting Climate Change, which runs through Sept. 22 and features work from 150 artists in Bellingham and the region.

Spherilous, along with about four other sculptures can be found in my favorite Bellingham intersection, Holly and Bay.

Won't you come closer?
