T is for tower

This is the church of Newton Arlosh church. As Pevsner says ' the tower was intended to be defensible, i.e. it has no outer doorway and only small windows including a ground level w slit. A doorway into the tower was from inside at first-floor level.'
In other words we are in the world of the Border Reivers. Newton means new town and the need for this was the result of a different enemy - the sea. Nearby Skinburness had been swept away.

Later on have a look at Cumbria here I come (Marpaul)'s journal for a blipmeet!
