Borestone

On the 9th September 1513, 14,000 people lost their lives at the Battle of Flodden. It was a disaster for Scotland, losing its King, James IV, many nobles and 10,ooo in all. The stone supposedly commemorates the place where the army gathered outside Edinburgh andwhere the Scottish standard was placed The plaque telling the story is missing, not stolen but being restored.

The battle is commemorated in poetry and song. 'The Floo'ers o' the Forest' are the Scottish dead.
