China's tallest building under construction
Set to become the tallest building in China and the world's second tallest building at 660 metres and 115 storeys. It's located in Futian, Shenzhen, and is named Ping An International Finance Centre (平安国际金融中心)
When I visited the site tonight I met a construction worker Mr. Wang, from Guizhou province, who's working on site and actually much to my surprise tried but failed to get me on site. Thanks anyhow. They're working to tight deadlines, he tells me, to push on hard with construction. He pointed to a red banner that reads 'Build to 200 metres by 30th September'. They're ahead of schedule and have already hit 220 metres; which is about 32 storeys. Mr. Wang confidently added 'This building will be complete by the end of, 2014', next year.

Thornton Tomasetti is providing performance-based structural design services for what will become the world’s second tallest building and the tallest in China, at 660 meters. Basement excavation and foundation work for the 116-story office tower began in early 2010. The building has a total gross floor area of 378,600 square meters plus a basement area of 90,000 square meters. The project will consist of offices, supporting facilities, a conference center, and parking. It will seek LEED certification.
The selected structural system consists of a composite concrete core with steel outriggers connecting to eight super-columns. The exterior frame is composed of seven double layer belt trusses located at the mechanical and refugee floors. The exterior belt trusses are interconnected with a super diagonal at each exterior face of the building. The project also includes a steel-framed 11-story podium with high-end shopping arcades, restaurants and roof-top cafes. Thornton Tomasetti has performed extensive nonlinear dynamic time history seismic analysis.
