Govanhill Baths, Calder Street, Glasgow

Doors Open Day Weekend

Edwardian baroque style public baths and "steamie" opened in 1917. The building remained almost unchanged until it closed in 2001. A huge public campaign, including occupation of the building, led to a community trust being formed, and plans to re-open pools, and create other leisure facilities.

Our two sons learnt to swim here, so it really was a trip down memory lane touring the building today. This main pool is currently in use by Strathclyde Theatre Group, hence the staging at the deep end.

We also visited the Pollokshaws West Station, housing the new South West Community Cycles, Pollokshaws Burgh Hall, and the Sikh Gurdwara.

We hope to visit some more venues tomorrow.
