Avebury Manor

We arranged to go to Avebury some weeks ago to meet Lozarithm again and to have another day out at a National Trust property before the weather turned. We chose well as it was mostly sunny with just occasional clouds scudding across the blue sky, although it was a bit breezy when we had our picnic at the bottom of the huge ring ditch ringing the stone circle.

Avebury is a village set in the midst of an array of ancient stones lying within a circle of large earthen ramparts. The village is actually relatively recent having being built mostly since the fifteenth century. At it's heart lies a church, a tithe barn, a pub, some nineteenth century housing and Avebury Manor, a National Trust property about which I still know very little.

We did explore it, wandering throughout its rooms and Helena did glean a bit about the recent history of its renovation. I think it has had a lot of publicity as well as tv programmes showing it off, all of which passed me by.

My favourite part of it was this tearoom, built in an extension to the house. I loved the atmosphere there as soon as we went inside, but because it was so popular there were no tables free for us to sit within the room, so we ordered out tea and cakes to be consumed in its very pleasant entrance hall. I nipped back into the room to take this picture.

I am sure we'll return another time to see more of the stones and the circle, when we have more energy to do it justice by walking round the perimeter. I also want to photograph it when the light is lower in the sky, as it is so atmospheric then.
