This beautiful and enormous cedar has stood for around 200 years in the grounds of our school; far longer than the school itself. Over the weekend, a mad Surrey tornado ripped a limb from its canopy and sent it crashing onto the Year 5 block, breaking a skylight and filling the rooms with glass. My first job today was to rehouse the two classes while the mess was cleared.
Second job was to locate the local authority lumberjack (although he has a much more imperious title) so that he could come and say that, sadly, the tree will have to come down. During the day, it began to lean even more.
The crew arrived to take it down but it was too unstable to be climbed so they will return tomorrow with a cherry picker so that they can remove the branches before attacking the trunk. That's if it's still standing. I am told that it is highly likely that it will come down on its own in the next 24-48 hours - if it does, it will take out two classrooms.
What is life going to throw at the school next?
