Cox's Stack
A beautiful day, with blue sky and high cloud - perfect for getting a photo of Cox's Stack.
This is a huge edifice built in 1864 by James Cox, one of the owners of Cox Brothers who at the time were the largest Jute manufacturers in the world with 820 powerlooms and 150 handlooms. The 86 m (282 ft) high campanile-style factory chimney was designed by local architect James MacLaren, and it remained in use until 1982. It is the highest chimney is Scotland.
Because of the growing Jute industry, many Irish people started to arrive in Dundee, and Lochee in particular and, by 1855, there were 14,000 Irish immigrants in Dundee, most of whom stayed in Lochee, or 'Little Tipperary' as it would come to be known.
The factory area has now become a popular retail and entertainment site known as The Stack. The view is from a new housing development to the south of the Chimney.
