St. Cuthbert's cross
I had a some free time between meetings in Edinburgh today, and I wandered down to St. Cuthbert’s church.
I’ve never been there before, so I went in to take a look, and was shown around and told about its history by one of the volunteers. There’s thought to have been a church on this site since at least 850, possibly even earlier. Among the things I learned, was that at one time the minister had fishing rights to the Nor' Loch - which, as it received most of the sewage from the Old Town was heavily polluted, so that may not have been much of a benefit!
The graveyard has some wonderful old monuments and inscriptions, but I’ve already blipped about cemeteries a couple of times and I don’t want everyone to get the idea that I’m morbidly fascinated with them, so I thought I should look for something else!
This may look like someone’s taken a can of spray paint to a tiled floor. But actually, thanks to the strong sunlight today, it’s a shadow cast on the floor of the entrance lobby by a celtic cross motif in the glass of the door.
