Orkney Day 4

Walkmill Bay seen on our further explorations of the West side of the Island, just round the corner from Scapa Flow.

Weather cool, breezy and overcast when we started out and we nearly took refuge in the Highland Park Distillery, just outside Kirkwall but decided to carry on as there was so much more we wanted to pack into the day. We had a walk along the beach at Scapa then on to Stromness having taken in ALL the lovely viewpoints along the way. We loved Stromness and would dearly liked more time there but did stay for a very good lunch at Julia's Cafe as recommended by her Ladyship Findhorn! (Thanks LF).
Then we drove on to Skara Bray to marvel at the Neolithic Village there and the magnificent Skaill House, the finest 17th century mansion in Orkney, home of William Graham Watt, 7th Laird of Breckness who unearthed Skara Bray in 1850.

Finally we drove further north up to Birsay where it was warm and sunny and quite sheltered on the beach. More magnificent views from there.

A lovely drive back in glorious sunshine showing the mountains and vast fields off in their finest colours of every shade of green, purple, lilac and soft grey hues - then we hit thick haar in Kirwall and drove home with only views of the rear lights of the car in front and oncoming headlights towards us!!

Then the sun came out and the log burner lit!! Another perfect day.
